Southern Lord 2010 Vinyl Subscription, rip off??

Postby Brutalicon » 01 Feb 2010, 06:43

Check out the Southern Lord website to see what I am talking about. It looks good, but 170.00 + shipping seems a little pricy (about 24 and change + shipping for each one). I would think you would get a price break for pre-ordering them all. The Trap Them LP is a one sided MLP. the extra stuff better be awesome.

any feelings on this?

Their vinyl gets snapped up pretty fast so even if the price break isn't much, or nonexistent, atleast you know you'll get your copies without paying out the ass. I'd only be interested in the Trap Them LP and maybe Yob, though I'd like to hear the Buzzov*en cover on the Black Cobra vinyl.

Southern Lord has a growing monopoly on shitty metal. They are moving in on what has traditionaly been Century Media and Nuclear Blast's market.

Their strength lies in the distro. They do snatch up the rights to good bands, like Deathspell Omega and Glorior Belli, amoung a few others

Over the last few years, they seem to sign and release every crappy stoner/doom/drone/hipster/beardo shit on earth. Some of those bands are decent, but most of it is just a flavor of the month trend, and Southern Lord is saturating the metal scence with this art school garbage.

Im willing to bet that 75% of the bands no their roster (not distro) won't be active in 3 years.

I don't think they're saturating the scene, they only have a handful of active bands and some of them are the same core of guys that have been playing forever (Sunn/Pentemple/Gravetemple etc). They've fallen off in quality but no where near the decline that they'd be comparable to the shit Century Media and Nuclear Blast shovel out. Most of their current bands, like Lair of the Minotaur, Boris, Pelican, Black Cobra, Earth, and Wino, have been around for quite some time. I only heard one of the two debut albums they released this year (barring Wino), that being Eagle Twin, and thought it was decent. I don't know how the Black Breath ablum is though.

Southern Lord are rip-off artists, don't do it. I ordered a Corrupted 12" EP two years ago and I still haven't received it.

Godammit, I am tempted, but Ohiogrinder is right, they are. I order 2copies of a oris 7" that i only got 1 of. I also order Wolves In The Throneroom "Malevolent Grain" 12" that i never got. i emailed them almost 10 times with a response from some guy named Mike telling me they were busy with orders. Like I give a fuck... It should never take 1 1/2 months to never get something, or 2 years. Sorry, al this IPA i have had tonight is making me pissed i never got the stuff i ordered, and worse got a fucking rehtarded (The Hangover) answer emailed back to me.

I like a lot of their bands but I would never order directly from Southern Lord. Lots of similar horror stories from friends of mine like the ones Brutal and Grinder mentioned.

I think that what they have going on is a really cool idea. Too bad they sound shady.

So.....

I did breakdown and order this after bitching about it on this thread. I wanted all the LPs in the subscription and figured this was the most inexpensive way to do it and the presentation is always well done from SL. I was just worried about them being shady.

As it turns out, so far so good. I have gotten 4 of the 7 releases already and pretty much when they said they would be arriving. might be a turnaround for SL. New Trap Them, rad.

i've read on some other vinyl collectors forums that the mailorder department of southern lord has had a complete overhaul and it is a different guy running it now so should be safe to order from them, maybe even worth contacting them about old unfulfilled orders

i personally wouldn't go for the subscription but am definitely tempted by the black breath album and am eagerly awaiting the burning witch vinyl re-release

They're cashing in on the fact that people are willing to pay a premium (and in advance) for well designed and packaged vinyl...personally I think they're overcharging a bit. But hey if their limited editions sell out right away then they're doing something right.

I thought so at first but the 2 things that got me besides the good albums were the custom designed slipmat for subscribers and the TBD 7th release that is only for subscribers. I thought that was worth it since I most likely would have bought all of these releases anyways and in little 'ol Reno I would have to mailorder them and postage would be expensive for each separate order.

Considering what some of their vinyl releases go for on the second hand market, their prices are pretty reasonable.

That's the other part, people buying to resell them on Ebay.
