Riffs thread

Postby ohiogrinder » 04 Feb 2010, 01:10

I did a search for this topic but nothing came up.

the breakdown riff that kicks in at 1:13 in the Morbid Saint song "Damien" gets me everytime.

I'd post an example but I'm afraid this board doesn't allow youtube links.

post your favorite riffs!

Anything Mustaine (excepting Risk and the odd commercial song) or Abbath does is gold.

I really love that one Iron Maiden riff.

Also, the verse riff of Kreator's "Riot of Violence" is the best thrash riff ever, obviously.

Methinks Biff's just messing with ya. Maiden are riff machines and I bet he likes most of their discography. Or, it could be The Trooper. That's the song most people mention where riffs are concerned.

I've always loved the riffs Soilent Green play, A Grown Man and Afterthought of a Genius spring to mind. The song Four Twelve by Sally also contains one of my favourite riffs of all time, even if it is simple as hell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X1lz0vxVa0 (about 30 seconds in).

I wasn't really messing with him, just joking around in general. Maiden has always been my favorite band...Im a super fan. I like their entire discography....although the Blaze albums are pretty bad, I can still find some good Dave Murray solo's on all the tracks!

Trooper is certainly great , eventhough it's a bit over played.

Riot of Violence is a Frankenstein mish-mash of riffs - any of which could have been developed into their own song - that is laced and sewn together in a manner that can only be described as shear musical genius. :D

Lightning Strikes Again by Dokken has some sweet riffs. I know, I know. I generally hate hair-metal, but I absolutely love George Lynch and Dokken.

Babykiller by Nightstick
The Master by Fistula
Master of Alchemy by Electric Wizard Link
Flake by 16 (:40)
Master of Confusion by Blood Ceremony (kicks in ~2:33) Link

A ton of others but those are the first few that came into my head.

I've got to go back to the original riff master -- Iommi. For my money, he owns most of the best metal riffs ever. "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath" might just be the perfect metal riff to me, with "Symptom of the Universe" a close second. Hell, basically anything from those first six records.

This.

Ritchie Blackmore has more than his fair share of iconic riffs as well.

Yeah you really can't argue with this statement, Iommi wrote the book on incredible riffs. Maybe an odd choice but I think the main riff to A National Acrobat is one of his finest.

How about "Asteroid" from the new Vektor album (which was just recently reviewed here) - this song starts off like most classic early-NWOBHM era songs, with that great simple chunk-guitar over a simple rock drumbeat. Can't get better than that.
