Ulcerate- Everything Is Fire

just my 2 cents on this since its mention started a big "I hate tech death" tangent in another thread recently. I broke down & bought it. utterly forgettable at 1st, stuck w/ it & now I can't stop listening to it. unlike Decrepit Birth, they don't seem to try to write songs that are memorable or catchy (as death metal goes). unlike Augury, they don't have tons of flash. unlike Origin or Obscura, they don't seem to be concerned w/ how heavy they seem. the album seems to be more about creating a feeling of dread in the listener, like black metal except it sounds nothing like black metal.

at any rate, I've found myself listening to this & Pink Floyd's Animals every day for 5 or 6 weeks. ultimately it was absolutely worth my money. just in case anyone was on the fence about this one.

hmm maybe I will have to try again but I didn't get anything out of this when I listened to it. gave it 3 or 4 listens too but admittedly not full attention.

Same here. I gave it a couple of tries but felt no desire to revisit it. I like their sound but they need to learn how to write an actual song.

that's what makes it a tough album to recommend. they absolutely do not have memorable songs. I got the new Alice in Chains the same day & that was stuck in my head after 1 listen. only a few songs on the Ulcerate CD stand out & you won't find yourself humming them later. it could be one CD that's wise to try before you buy.

Cryptopsy on acid. Completely insane stuff that really doesn't call for actual song structures. My grind buddy was mesmerized when I introduced him to this band. I've tried to decipher the guitar parts but it's hopeless. I'm not sure if these guys just go at will or if they actually sit down and map this shit out. It's pretty amazing. Obviosuly it isn't something I can listen to all the time but I own the record.

Mitochondrion is even more insane AND their songs are memorable. So, it can be done. By the way, I'm surprised you like this album so much considering that Molested was too violent for you.

Mitochondrion are amazing, perhaps the finest new death metal band out there. I like Ulcerate, but I rarely reach for them. They're just tweeking the Immolation formula anyways.

It's not fair to compare a band to Mitochondrion. At least give Ulcerate a fighting chance and compare them to Psycroptic or something.

The Molested was to dirty. Something about that Ulcerate that holds my interest. I normally don't like anything like that but I do. I actually like Immolation as well, and as Dan said, they do play on that formula. It's like there's a melody buried in all that mess.
