Songs You Love By Bands You Hate...

Postby Facial La Fleur » 05 Feb 2010, 07:09

Everyone has plenty of bands that they love that every once in awhile put out material that isn't so agreeable to their ears like the rest of their songs but how about we think of this in reverse? What are some good songs by terrible bands? Post links if you can.

Manowar - "Courage"

I have a real issue with bands that sing about how awesome they are or how much they love metal. Manowar is one of the most guilty bands to do this. At least when HammerFall and some other bands write about metal they do it in a metaphorical way with the whole Templar angle. I really never could get into many Manowar songs but I am a sucker for a good power ballad.

Ion Dissonance - "Play Dead... And I'll Play Along"

I think that I am most critical when it comes to 'core' type genres. It's very rare that I find something I actually like even mildly. The album version of this song isn't so impressive but to hear it in the live setting and see how the whole crowd explodes during the "Kill yourself or someone you love" breakdown is quite a sight to see. They're a pretty terrible band generally but this single song made enough of an impression on me that I didn't skip their sets the next couple times I saw them opening for other bands.

Avenged Sevenfold - "Chapter 4"

I can't think of too many bands that I dislike more than Avenged Sevenfold but this song just has something about it that gets it's hooks into me and I listen to it far more often that I'd like to admit. This was before the dude completely blew out his voice so the vocals aren't half bad. Basically this songs reminds me of a mix of Bad Religion, Strung Out, and Metallica, all of which I love most of their material. If I had one complaint about this song it would probably be the sort of breakdown toward the end but at least there is a riff happening on top of it and not just the chugging shit most others use.

Im going to play devil's advocate here.....

If you like a song by a band, doesn't that kind of cross over into being a fan ? (of at least SOME of their material ?)

No, I think you'd have to like more than half of their songs to be considered a fan. If you only like 1 or 2 songs out of a selection of 30 or more then you're definitely not fan but acknowledge that one song as decent.

Rob Zombie - Two Lane Blacktop
My Chemical Romance - Teenages (Scare the Living Shit Outta Me!)...don't know why other than it's catchy as hell!
Creed - One

I'll think of more later...

I actually like "What If" and "Ode" quite a bit but can't stand most of everything else they've done. I think generally I'm of the opinion that even the worse music artists in the world have at least one decent song. I'm not going to elaborate too much as to not look completely homosexual but I've found myself even liking some pop music from time to time.

that's nonsense. plenty of pop on the radio that I think are good, well-written and catchy songs - Jason Mraz "I'm Yours" for instance - but I'm not interested in downloading it from iTunes or buying one of his albums. (Although his concerts are probably packed with cute girls)

It's too late already. You've already demonstrated your flagrant homosexuality by announcing that you like Bullet for My Valentine and Atreyu.

50 Cent - Ayo Technology

Normally I dislike Fitty with a passion and it's even worse if you add Timberlake to the proceedings but this song reminds me of the old Commodore 64 soundtracks. It somehow won me over.

My Chemical Romance - The Ghost Of You

Only song I like from them. Has a vague Katatonia-ish vibe which I dig.

No wonder, considering Timbaland has a record of stealing stuff w/o credit from C64 and other retro-machine mod/demo-scenes.

Flame me all you want, but the album that song comes from is brilliant - the whole damn album - I love it. Everything else they've done has been total crap, but that album is one huge slice of awesome.

I don't necessarily hate the following bands, but I can't say I'm much of a fan, or in some cases know that much of their stuff, but I like these songs.

Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
Been Caught Stealing - Janes Addiction
Midlife Crisis - Faith No More (I also dig Epic)
Goddamn Devil - Ugly Kid Joe
Stuck in the Middle - Steeler's Wheel
Suspicious Minds - Elvis
Milk Lizard - Dillinger Escape Plan

For sure! Absolutely love that song, but if you try a whole album of theirs it gets very wearing.

Not for me, it doesn't.

It's very soothing, "sleepy-time" music plus I quite dig her voice.

Not until today!

I'm really impressed with her. Very Nico/Lene Lovich-ish and quite dark for what's supposed to be pop. Thanks, Tim!

I dig the shit out of the Violator album. 'Halo,' 'Clean,' 'Policy of Truth' and 'World Through My Eyes' are fucking ace. Can't say the same for a lot of DM's discography, but Violator is just stellar.

For a while, I couldn't stand Goatwhore, and the only song of theirs that I really dug was 'Sky Inferno.' Bleak, crispy, blackened goodness.
