Review of Defeatist - Sixth Extinction

Label: Willowtip / Year: 2010 / Artist website

So after 2009s compilation Sharp Blade Sinks Deep Into Dull Minds collected all of Defeatist’s many split and EP, here is a new album of noisy, feral grindcore chaos from the chaps responsible for Anodyne and Kalibas .

While not as structured and power chord as their European label mates and counterparts like Infanticide and Afgrund, Defeatist are no less savage, with more virulent , raw and chaotic strains of US hardcore and sludge pulsing in their veins as opposed to the Nasum inspired hues of their Swedish brethren.

The result is a calamitous and venomous affair that delivers 19 tracks in 27 minutes full of feral screams and sonic detritus that’s scattershot, yet vitriolic and intense. The occasional tangent into sludgy pastures (EyeHateGod comes to mind) such as “Heresy’s Delusion”, “Death Holds Her Brood”, “Man’s Inhumanity To Man” and “Xtul’ break the albums shrieking tenacity up here and there, but for the most part, Sixth Extinction is a frenzy of breakneck chaos and relentless noise that could be grating to some, especially the vocals of Aaron Nichols.

However, when taken in such short (everything is under 2 minutes), manic bursts such as “Fall in Line”, “Dawn of No Light”, “Malice Engine”, “Without Will” and “Drained”, all armed with Colin Marston’s (Behold the Arctopus/ Krallice) rough and corrosive production, deliver a searing, vital take on chaos and noise that’s rendered and delivered in a perfectly timed, explosive package.

Looks like another blistering year for Willowtip…
