Vulgar Pigeons
Summary Execution

Damned if DeathVomit isn’t becoming quite the nifty little grind-pimp; first, Circle Of Dead Children and now Vulgar Pigeons. As an unreformed little punk rocker, I have to confess a major hard-on for this type of stuff. Eventually, some band’s going to come along and prove me wrong, but for now, death metal without some sort of grind/punk/crust tendency seems kind of stale. But VP have that tendency like a fucker. All the usual suspects are here: inhumanly fast blasting, hoarsely screamed vocals, chunk-chunk breakdowns. You know the drill. But the free-wheeling, zero-attention-span esprit of the thing makes it damn pleasant. Plus these Bay Area bullies are bright enough to realize that “extremity” and “humor” don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Seriously, can you imagine, say, Nile covering “Fuck Tha Police?” Thought not. But the Pigeons throw weird little crapbombs all over the place, like the piano shimmyshake break in “In The Hands Of A Benevolent Chimpanzee Scientist.” Good stuff. And mad props to any band that gives shout-outs to Al DiMeola, Joey Ramone, and Tylenol PM in the liner notes.
