Infected Flesh
Concatenation of Severe Infections

I probably don’t have to expand on the style of this album assuming you can see the cover art, see the band moniker and the label and song titles like “Lithographies of Recurrent Splatter”, “Impudent Dissection of the Perfidious Idol” and “Fermentation of Prosthetic Remains” . Power metal this is not.

Infected Flesh were a long running Spanish brutal death metal band who had two full length albums in the early/mid 00s and are now a multinational two piece featuring lone original member Roger B on guitar, bass and vocals and Sven Van De Loo of Severe Torture and Centurian fame on drums. The resultant noise is what you’d expect; gurgling brutal gore grind death metal of the sloppiest kind.

Musically there isn’t much going on that isn’t a staple of the genre, but there are some solid riffs and a pretty different guitar tone for the style that make it a solid listen. However, the distant, burped froggy vocals turn me off a little bit. The are almost spoken throaty burps (akin to burping your ABC’s) with the appropriate levels of gurgle and layers of screams. its not terrible or derailing, its just there’s no real power or presence which saps some of the brutality from the album.

Which is a shame as there are some pretty good pinch harmonic based riffs on here, at least par for the course but with a bit of a twisty Malignancy vibe. All of the tracks are pretty standard squeal/blast/groove numbers and as I mentioned earlier, are rendered with a pretty nice clean, sharp, almost Floridan guitar tone instead of the usual overdone, murky tone. For example “Erase the Rictus” has a nice, fairly unique segment about halfway in,  “Phossilized Between the Walls of a Post-Industrial Ziggurat”  has some interesting stuttering stop start riffage, and “Inoculation” has a pace changing phlegmy crawl, but even with those few moments,  Concatenation of Severe Infections is still a rudimentary example of the style that only true die hards might appreciate.

I’m more impressed with a brutal death metal band working the word “concatenation” into an album title…
