Means
Sending You Strength

Originality in metalcore is pretty much non-existent, I think most of us can agree on that. But I have always wondered why more bands don’t rip off better bands. So many Killswitch Engage clones, yet only a few bands seem to have focused on the ultra layered, melodic metalcore of Misery Signals or Life In Your Way. The only good one I’ve heard is Rosesdead. Of course, until now, when I get two very Misery Signals inspired records; It Prevails’ The Inspiration, and the debut from this enjoyable Regina, Canada band.

Seeing frontman Dylan Johnstone sporting a Misery Signals shirt in the CD inlay and the band being first in the thanks list serves to cement where this very competent band is coming from; Shimmering, melodic, emotional and uplifting, Means’ sound is heavy yet harmonic. The breakdowns are a little more prevalent than their obvious peers, and the clean emo vocals are used a little more, but music wise, Sending You Strength is a strong record that seems unashamed of its blatant influences. Of course there’s the requisite interlude in the form of “Cadences” and “I Chose Her Over Light”, but otherwise the tracks are pretty darn solid Misery Signals worship, with a slightly more commercial lean; just check out “Looking to The Grave”, “Down to the Spark”, “The Promise”, “Through The Wires” and standout “Throw Open the Gates”. All are burly yet beautiful hymns of positive, vibrant metalcore that comes across with honesty, conviction and a certain uplifting charm.

Not quite up there with Life In Your Way as far as sheer emotion, but certainly comparable. Arguably one of Facedown’s better recent releases, I could see Means making a bit of noise in the scene and deservedly so.
