The debut album, Hate Takes its Form, from this Danish death metal act was a pleasant surprise back in 2007 and a nice find for Deepsend Records. So I was really looking forward to this EP, especially after hearing from the label owner that is was to contain 3 rather tasty cover tracks as well as 2 new tracks.
First, the two new tracks; they basically continue the Suffocation meets Jungle Rot chunky styled death metal of Hate Takes its Form. “Extinction Seems Imminent” complete with Dexter sample and “Ridden With Disgust” both lope and groove with a simple but satisfying purpose and Jacob Hansen’s (Communic, Mercenary, Svartsot, Volbeat, Destinity, etc) huge production.
However, the draw of this EP is the three covers of three seminal tracks from three legendary bands and albums. First up is Suffocation’s “Infecting the Crypts” from the classic 1991 debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten and the track’s seminal opening groove is perfectly suited for the bands down tuned tones and Scott Jensen’s deep bellow. Then there is the legendary “Blinded By Fear” from At The Gates, arguably the very template track for all melodic death metal, which is given a nice dose of heft and heaviness by the Dane’s innate sense of groove. Finally from Obituary’s Cause of Death there is “Turned Inside Out”- and while the pace and structure of the track is a perfect fit, Jensen’s somewhat monotone vocals don’t quite convey the pained throes of John Tardy.
A nice stop gap, and actually one of the more worth while EPs with three of the better and most fitting cover tracks I’ve heard. Rather than try to be all cute and cover something off the wall or controversial, Dawn of Demise said “fuck it” and simply covered three classic death metal tracks and pulled them off very well. I look forward to the new album and hope Deepsend can continue its run of solid releases.
