Review of Kill Division - Peace Through Tyranny

My favorite grindcore album of all time is Napalm Death’s From Enslavement to Obliteration. Has been since its release over 3 decades ago. A close second would be Terrorizer’s debut World Downfall. The list of grind bands with terrific albums is endless. Every once in a while, a grind album is released that blows my head off and while Napalm Death will always be the best grind band of all time Kill Division‘s debut Peace Through Tyranny is that album that will make your head spin and whipping out that classic Terrorizer album faster than you can say Corporation Pull-In!

Armed with members from Inhuman Condition, Gruesome and Megadeth, of all bands, how can you go wrong? Leading this impressive musicians lineup is Dirk Verbeuren, the Megadeth drummer who will make his Megadeth debut on their new album. The new single already brings forth a more aggressive Megadeth. Dirk is an extreme metal drummer that I’ve followed for a bit. He’s drummed on releases from Aborted, Cadaver and The Project Hate, just to give you an idea and he’s in like 50 million bands. The man is a drumming machine and I guess grindcore was something he needed to check off his bucket list. This 11 song 24 minute album is such ferocious yet ultra-catchy grind that once “If You Only Knew” opens it’s an homage to the Terrorizer debut album. Drum rolls and guitar riffs are so razor sharp and the opening gallop has you wondering hmmmm when is that Holy Shit moment going to hit especially if you never knew Dirk’s extensive extreme drumming resume.

The 1.10 moment is the proverbial Holy Shit moment. Isolated guitar riff with the song title growled and SONIC FUCKING BOOM——- Right into the whirlwind grind blast. JFC if you’re not launching houses and your local Deli into orbit you’re brain dead. The song slows to a killer groove before the gallop returns and the song name is repeated and then right into the blast.

Holy crap. I can barely catch my breath before “Surrounded by Filth” opens up with the Holy Shit moment. Isolated guitar riff then right into the blast as the word “ Thrash” is growled. So classic. Vocalist Kyle Symons berates us by saying the title track a few times that he’s convinced me I’m the filth he’s surrounded by! The groove part will have pits launching bodies into the Crab Nebula!

The title track is an homage to The Transformers. All Hail Megatron!!!! Vicious and monster blasts with a guitar tone the late great Jesse Pintado (RIP) would be proud of. The drum rolls, audible bass guitar, vocals and riffs showcase a rhythm machine that has skill and precision and stop-on-a-dime grind which will take your head and use it at the next Badminton champion event.

“Freak” begins with a groove and catchy buildup before classic beats and patterns and puts your body into a swirling tornado of souls vortex. “Hatred Inspired” is a great headbanging opener. And check out the monster double bass with an undercurrent of bass plucking right after the opening sequence. This song traverses into blasts and that awesome double bass and the bass guitar moment returns. “Walking Dead” starts with another classic galloping buildup before the grind blast erupts and destroys. Killer album. Fittingly, the album closes with a cover of Terrorizer’s “Barely Alive” Alive”. That after listening to this you will barely be alive.

Kill Division’s Peace Through Tyranny is so damn catchy, expertly played, and ferocious, which makes this one of the best grind albums I’ve heard in decades. Catchy grindcore is tough to pull off but each song on this album is catchier than the previous one. This is the best grind album of 2022 and if you can’t get enough of Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Misery Index, Squash Bowels, Nasum etc.. and really need something new to melt you and your pet goldfish’ face off then this is a Buy or Die of the highest order. This KILLZ!!!!
