Review of Orcustus - Orcustus

Label: Southern Lord / Year: 2009 / Artist website

I’ve been occupied with thinking of the prospect of the arrival of a followup to Wrathrash for about fifteen seconds total over the past few years. I enjoyed both eps and the demo but sadly never think of playing them without a gentle nudge like popping open a package and seeing the cool cover to the s/t release that is the current object of discussion. Sadly that happened not at all because it was an email I opened with a download link for the promo full of unnamed audio tracks, so no nudge, and here I am much later playing it, what a slap in the face, self inflicted for stupidity, what was I not thinking?

Immediately I’m reminded why I enjoy this band. All rules of engagement are realized, bring in the heavy artillery, prepare to be pummeled senseless and blasted into nothingness. Enthusiasm carries the day. Saying you don’t like Orcustus is like saying you don’t like Sodom. If you want virtuosity go get Yngve’s latest reissue, if you want a full frontal assault that leaves a huge mess behind needing cleanup you’ve come to the right place. Fast, rough, raw and sloppy, you’ll be playing along inside of five minutes so get that guitar out of the closet and prepare to be energized.

“Ego Sum Chaos” and “Asphyxiokenisis” get the singled out treatment due largely to cool thrash riffs akin to Destruction on the former and a nice cross of Hellhammer and vintage slayer galloping along on the later.
