Ruin
Spread Plague Death

Ruin is a filthy California death metal band intent on throwing postulating open sores our way.  They started in the 90’s disbanded then resurrected like 6-7 years ago and Spread Plague Death is their third album. Their previous effort Human Annihilation is still an ultra-heavy display of Autopsy/Impetigo stylized death metal and Ruin like throwing in some roomy parts mixed with a horror movie vibe from clips/weird sounds.  So Spread Plague Death is 13 songs in 44 minutes and this album is hellbent on murdering your soul as well as fluffy the dog.

“Antemortem Dread” has a creepy intro before the doom death slogfest instrumental heaves forward. So heavy.  Guitar tone is even heavier than the previous album if that’s even possible. Very heavy and the fuzzy bass guitar.  Well this bottom end will cause the brown note in many.  Title track is next. To me it appears to be a clip of Jeffrey Dahmer talking about creating his sex slave zombies. After that the music comes forth, actually vomits forth, an old school death metal beat circa 1989.  Around the 1.50 mark a super slow down. So frickin’ heavy your chest cavity will collapse.  Double bass rolls in and vomitrocious vocals spewed in our faces as the classic mid paced fast beat comes in. This title track is absolutely murderous.

It’s so murderous the next song is  “Murderous Delirium”.   JFC. Check out that opening riff with that Impetigo/Lord Gore growl.  It’s so brilliant.  I mean it’s like a clogged sewer pipe.  I haven’t done my little Anatomy of a Song special in a longgggg time but now it goes to “Ornaments of Flesh”.  This track  has more of that horror intro sounds before a doom death meets Bolt Thrower rumbling heaviness takes you and body slams your rib cage over and over and over again. The faster parts come in and the song gets into a slower rumbling heaviness with some very cool guitar melodies. So damn good. The faster part comes in but the 2.30 part is the Holy Shit part. Isolated guitar part, with growl, cymbal hit and then drum hit, bass guitar slide and into a mid-paced classic picking up change beat. Thus section is beyond brilliant, heavy, catchy and is all set in motion by that Holy Shit moment which I repeat over at least 10,000x a day.  I do it because Mike Abominator tells me if I don’t he’s gonna take some Sheetrock and hammer it into my chest.

Ruin’s Spread Plague Death is the filthiest, grimiest death metal album for 2021. This is catchy, well written, nice production with a very classic late 80’s drawing. Can’t get enough of this filthy album.  One of the best for 2021. Buy or Die!
