Review of Ultra Zook - EPUZ

Label: Self-Released / Year: 2012 / Artist website

We get a lot of albums to review here at Teeth of the Divine. Not all of them are metal. We usually don’t cover those, but if it’s interesting or different enough, we’ll throw some words at it. So Ultra Zook is today’s lucky winner!

Ultra Zook is from France. This EP, Epuz, sounds like a shorter version of Mr. Bungle‘s California (which I love), just with more syncopated electronics and less genre-hopping craziness.

Okay, that was a boring description. So how about this one? Ultra Zook sounds like:

  • Unicorns with glow-stick horns going clip-clop clip-clop around your lounge chair as you sip mai-tais by the pool
  • Trying to rock out to your favorite indie-chiptune band while your grandmother’s chihuahuas hump on her Steinway
  • Count Dracula leading an army of keytar-wielding zombies
  • The most obnoxious boss battle music ever
  • A Speak ‘n Spell, a theremin and R2D2 breakdancing on a dance floor full of tin foil origami

Well, that’s what I got from it. Anyway, you will either find Ultra Zook geeky and entertaining, or random and annoying. Both answers are correct.
