Welp, I had literally forgotten about Italy’s slamtastic drum machined Vulvectomy! With three albums already under their belt, the last one being 12 years ago, I just kinda figured they packed up their slam sammiches and boogied on outta here. Main man Mario Di Giambattista is still kicking it with his guitars and programmed drums, and Diego Fanelli on vocals. Rounding out on bass is Giorgio Cavaliere, and their newest member is Marco Coghe on drums. The drum machine was ever noticeable on the prior releases, so Marco’s drums actually add warmth.
This is a rather long album for slam, with 10 songs in 40 minutes, but I guess the band figured, we have been away for a long time, so let’s get some quantity out there. With the porno death metal inspired bands from the Midwest USA, such as Lividity and Dismembered Fetus – Vulvectomy always fell into that category with the violent imagery towards females and the lyrics. Honestly, while I dig the music, all the lyrics and imagery never did it for me, but oh well.
“Maggots Infested Clit” with an opening intro, with some explicit violent spoken words before right into the slam. This beat is heavy AF, and it’s very pit erupting. I know, from my contact with Mario years ago, especially with his other act, Devangelic, he is a huge Internal Bleeding fan. The first Devangelic album, Resurrection Denied, from 2014, mentioned me in the liner notes as a vocal influence- that floored me and was super cool. This song gets into blast beat territory before returning to a slower beatdown slam with Diego and his putrid vocals. Staying guttural the entire time.
“Scrotal Abscess Drainage” is definitely something no dude wants to know about, and this begins with a blast beat, before the isolated guitars erupt, then BOOM, right into the slam. Towards the end of the track, along with the spoken word clip, it is worth noticing the rhythm section during this mid-paced slam. It’s very well done, elevating this release above their three prior albums, in my humble opinion.
Don’t get me wrong, I do like the previous albums, but this is wayyyy extra, very formidable. Given that this genre is a one-trick pony, blast, slam, slam, beat down slam, blast…rinse and repeat, I will forever be connected to this genre, given my work with Internal Bleeding. I love knuckle-dragging beat down brutality, and lest anyone forget this style of brutal death metal, in a live setting, with pits and such, to me, nothing is comparable, how well this style translates live.
I am aware many of you can’t get enough of “Greedy Fetal Discharge”, another song on this, and most of you ask for this sort of thing as stocking stuffers for Christmas. The slam at the one-minute mark is heavy. Simple, effective, and memorable, before the blast beat comes in to take away that fetus from you. Check out the beatdown slam at the 3-minute timestamp – it is crucial!
Aberrant Vaginal Gestation is the best Vulvectomy album to date. The slams and patterns are more well-thought-out. The production is crisp, and the tongue-in-cheek violent song titles and lyrics are very visually non-pleasing as ever. Fire up some pasta and pizza and throw this brutal slam album on; it’s a lot of fun.
