Well this is a most unrelentingly brutal release to get us moving into the fall season. Italy’s Daemusinem debut with their first release Thy Godly Defiance released by Willowtip Records. I was excited to hear about this project in being a fan of the group Putridity. Daemusinem is in no way like Putridity other than use of some similar techniques but style wise they are a very different style of death metal. The name Daemusinem loosely translates to, “Demon Mountain”. “Thy Ungodly Defiance” is a concept album based on the story of Fra Dolcino, a heretic preacher who lived in northern Italy during the 13th century, and was tortured and burnt at the stake by the Inquisition.

These deranged blasphemers waste no time in letting you know what styled old blackened death metal they are going to beat you with. Thy Godly Defiance opens up with “Natural Born Satanist” which starts off with a movie sample form The 1991 Sean Connery movie In The Name of Rose. Daemusinem seem to play a Deicide styled black/death metal that has thrashier elements. Vocally this is far less guttural and far more annunciation than Putridity. The faster more up tempo vocal patterns are a lot easier to follow and less chaotic than their alter ego.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmQvibdzMTY

“Unholy Trinity” feels like it could have literally been an extra track on Deicide’s classic second album Legion. Not the fastest thing in the world but again the riffing is fairly interesting and catchy throughout. At times I am also reminded of Diabolical Summoning era Sinister and Dan Swano’s old black/death project Infestdead.“Despaired Path of Suffering” is one of the more blast heavy tracks and reminds me a great deal of Aeon with the placement of bended pinch harmonics. I cannot find any major complaints throughout this first full length from these guys. I am actually rather impressed in the versatility of being able to switch from a west coast disgorge styled influenced band like Putridity to an effort like Daemusinem.

“Execrate the Cursed Martyr” finishes up Thy Ungodly Defiance on a pummeling ride of blistering blast beats and triumphant octave riffs climbing and pulsating. Overall this a pretty crushing first effort from these guys and think anyone looking for catchy Deicide, Centurian, Aeon, and Morbid Angel styled death metal this should be right up your alley. Very good album.
