I’ve enjoyed Denmark’s Dawn of Demise for 12 years, 4 albums and 1 EP now, despite absolutely nothing changing in the band’s sound since 2006s Hate Takes its Form, to 2016s The Suffering. Simple, chugging, groovy death metal. However, with the band’s fifth album, an increased sense of melody has upped the ante a little, adding to the band’s simplistic, but brutal arsenal.

Though still armed with a simple mid paced loping death metal lumber, the new melody imbues a sound that lies between country mates Illdisposed and Dying Fetus. With the focus still on beefy, pit inducing grooves and for lack of a better term, breakdowns, mingled with a few blast beats (i.e “In Silence He’ll Arise”, “The Permanent Cessation”, “Disgusting”) , Dawn of Demise is not reinventing the wheel one bit, but when they latch on to a killer, neck snapping groove, it really hits home as heard on tracks like the opening title track, “Perversion in the Flesh”, “The Exaltation” and closer “Mark My Words” show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyx3LAWfz4Y

And now with just a smidge more melody, tracks like “This Hate Will Consume You”, “Collapse” or “The Exaltation” border on melodic death metal, just with the attitude and heft of a 500lb gorilla. The grooves littered through every track are just monstrous, controlled assaults of carpet bombing, pummeling death metal goodness, particularly in my favorite tracks “Enraged” and utterly punishing penultimate track, “A Belated Abortion”. So if you are looking for that sweep filled, tech overload, just skip this and go for an Obscura album or Equipoise’s recent album. Because here, even with some melody , the three minute slabs of beef will not satisfy anyone looking for anything more than a simple, 38 minute beatdown.

Ive always been a fan of the underrated Danish death metal scene; Chunky, simple (and often intertwined) acts like Illdisposed, Iniquity, Corpus Mortale, Usipian, Koldborn, The Cleansing, and arguably one of the better recent additions, Dawn of Demise.

After a solid debut in 2008s Hate Will Take Its Form and a cover based EP in 2009s Lacerated, the relatively prolific Dawn of Demise return with their second full length album, the aptly titled, A Force Unstoppable. And make no bones, it’s not the fastest, most technical or most original album you’ll hear in 2010, but for 35 minutes, its will be one of the more effective and enjoyable bruisefests of 2010.

Still armed with the slamming backbone of Suffocation, a dash of Jungle Rot simplicity and their innate Danish chunk, Dawn of Demise aren’t out to wow you with their skill or complexity but bludgeon you with massive grooves, double bass rumbles and Scott Jensen’s deep roars and bellows. None of the tracks are going to reinvent death metal but many of them such as the trio of “Awaken the Aggressor”, “Amongst the Tortured” and certainly the monstrous mid paced rumble of suitably named closer “Juggernaut” are going to make you snap your neck with and authoritative delivery that makes no pretenses about being anything else.

The debut album, Hate Takes its Form, from this Danish death metal act was a pleasant surprise back in 2007 and a nice find for Deepsend Records. So I was really looking forward to this EP, especially after hearing from the label owner that is was to contain 3 rather tasty cover tracks as well as 2 new tracks.

First, the two new tracks; they basically continue the Suffocation meets Jungle Rot chunky styled death metal of Hate Takes its Form. “Extinction Seems Imminent” complete with Dexter sample and “Ridden With Disgust” both lope and groove with a simple but satisfying purpose and Jacob Hansen’s (Communic, Mercenary, Svartsot, Volbeat, Destinity, etc) huge production.

However, the draw of this EP is the three covers of three seminal tracks from three legendary bands and albums. First up is Suffocation’s “Infecting the Crypts” from the classic 1991 debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten and the track’s seminal opening groove is perfectly suited for the bands down tuned tones and Scott Jensen’s deep bellow. Then there is the legendary “Blinded By Fear” from At The Gates, arguably the very template track for all melodic death metal, which is given a nice dose of heft and heaviness by the Dane’s innate sense of groove. Finally from Obituary’s Cause of Death there is “Turned Inside Out”- and while the pace and structure of the track is a perfect fit, Jensen’s somewhat monotone vocals don’t quite convey the pained throes of John Tardy.

A nice stop gap, and actually one of the more worth while EPs with three of the better and most fitting cover tracks I’ve heard. Rather than try to be all cute and cover something off the wall or controversial, Dawn of Demise said “fuck it” and simply covered three classic death metal tracks and pulled them off very well. I look forward to the new album and hope Deepsend can continue its run of solid releases.

Taking the chunk of Danish/Belgian death metal, then lumber and lurch of Jungle Rot (and I hear some Hatework and Vore in here too) and the slam of say Eternal Suffering and Suffocation (without the complexity), Denmark’s Dawn of Demise have delivered a pretty damn stout offering of perfectly rendered death metal, giving Deepsend a solid end to 2007 after a relatively quiet year.

While hardly groundbreaking, Hate Takes Its Form does everything right to be a damn fine death metal record; it’s never too simplistic to be boring, never a full on slam/groove fest or hardcore laced (i.e. Pyrexia/Internal Bleeding) tough guy fest and never too complex to be attention draining, but rather a solid mix of all three with a dash of solos to boot. With a super chunky Jacob Hanson (Aborted, Mercenary, Nightrage) guitar tone and some ferocious, if overbearing vocals courtesy of Scott Jensen, the 10 tracks on the album are no nonsense, neck snapping heft that should satisfy all walks of death metal fans.

Starting with the opening title track (featuring a guest solo from former Hatesphere frontman Jacob Bredahl) through standouts “Beyond Murder” and “Domestic Slaughter” (with guest vocals by Lars Bjørn-Hansen of Koldborn), through 6 minute closer “Regain Our Masochist”, Dawn of Demise roar and rumble their way through 45 minutes of no frills, churn and chug styled death metal that’s easy on the brain, but deadly on the neck and shoulders.

My only minor gripe would be the mix of Jensen’s vocals which on head phones, with their Left/Right mix can be a bit off-putting and dominating, but it’s a minor complaint on a enjoyable meaty album of death metal that in the impending assault of technical death metal, should remind us all of simpler, more pummeling days.
