Right before my former writing job at Metal Maniacs went titties up, I had been given the assignment to do a couple of pages on Dodsferd, and the sole proprietor involved in the project, Wrath. (Just an a side note here; why is it that in all these one man projects the lone guy has his own made up name, and they all seem to insist on making up a second name for their bands? As in, “Hi, I’m Wrath, this is my band Dodsferd, which is just me. I’m the only guy. I’m Wrath.” Silly.).

Anyway, I had submitted a couple dozen questions that I perceived to be thoughtful, but literally a day after I sent them out the magazine folded. So all my queries remain unsatisfied.

Onto the album I have been tasked to review. The label PR guy I spoke with back then swore to me this is to be a full length release, and it has plenty of length with a 20 minute song and a 16 minute song, but this thing just feels like an EP to me. The 2 tracks on hand here (title track and “His Veins Colored the Room”) seem to be long for the sake of being long. The same riffs are repeated ad nauseum and, while they are good riffs, there is nothing here that couldn’t have been expressed within these songs in under 10 minutes each.

Dodsferd 2009 is quite a step away from the raw as fuck Black n’ Roll beginnings set forth on Fucking your Creation. The follow up to that album was 2007’s Cursing Your Will To Live which was already quite a drastic departure from that previous effort and was more akin to the more caustic but traditional fair, ala Horna or Behexen. Then came Death Set the Beginning To My Journey in 2008, which I was privileged to hear an advance stream of, but I no longer have it in hard copy or in an MP3 format. So I’m forced to judge Suicide…. on it’s own merits and I simply must say that the leaps Wrath has made within this project are shocking! It is as if he is jumping from one BM style to another, whether he is just covering all his bases, keeping listeners on our toes, or band wagon jumping I have no way of knowing. Perhaps it varies depending on just where this guys head is at any given moment. This release resides in the way slow, way eerie, and somewhat trance inducing blackened arena and appears to be pushing us all toward creating our own demise.

At the end of the day, I enjoy this cd, simply for what it is. Well played, solid material regardless of subgenre, it fits into the Dodsferd catalog simply by not fitting into any preconceived notions. It is startling to think that this is the same project that began only a few years ago, when I compare this album to th e previous releases that I am familiar with, it’s like night and day (not in a sunny sense ) delivered by 2 completely different entities.

Personally, I’m not convinced that this wasn’t conceptually an EP until it got into the labels hands due to a general dearth of ideas on hand, but the ideas that are presented within each track are strong and sinister in there own rights but if this thing is going for $14 and up range (as most Moribund stuff I see in stores is), just wait and get it used for the more accurate $8 price tag I believe it deserves. I smell label shenanigans, but I’m making a lot of assumptions at this point.

Black metal for misanthropic Luddites gets another boost from Wrath. Raw, orthodox production values and defiance of modern recording technology are on display once again. Cursing Your Will To Live is album number three in a year and a half, and he managed a split release in there as well.

Usually such a proliferation would be cause for concern over quality controls, but Wrath does not disappoint, though I’m sure he would say he is writing for no one but himself. The disciple of Akhenaten probably wishes for you to die in a car crash, preferably taking others with you. Seventy minutes in duration, this album seems short. The songs are shorter and more focused, angrier, and more aggressive, which makes the hour and ten minutes fly past. Just in case you have not been hit in the head hard enough or often enough to grasp the message of these songs, Wrath spells in out for you, “I am a nihilist by philosophy. Humans are the cancer of this world.”

Akhenaten worked simple riffs repeated throughout a song to near perfection. Wrath does his best to carry on the tradition. Simple catchy riffs repeated many many times with slight variations, sloppiness or intentional I do not know, moves the music forward incrementally. Layered guitar lines fill in and add texture. Even the fast blastbeat driven songs like the title track are still guitar driven. Sometimes it gets repetitive to the point of mesmerizing, especially in “Your Death, My Propitiation”, or is it mind numbing. Once you get past the movie sample, “I Kept Standing with Disgust”, is short and blazing fast. I can’t imagine Wrath can get any angrier than this. That is something I’d like to hear, probably in another six months or so. “Under A Broken Cross, I Buried Your World” is the most out of place track, six minutes of movie samples, shrieks, moans, croaks, wails over a static noise track. There is no musical progression and we learn that he is following his own path. We also get a preacher threatening that your soul will burn in everlasting fire. I have only one question for Wrath, are you the torturer or the torture victim here?

If you want to complain about sound quality pull out your copy of Motorhead Slayground and put it on the turntable for a few spins and then come back to Dodsferd. It sounds great the way it is to me, but that should get the rest of you to appreciate this disc as well. Some bands would benefit greatly from a skilled producer, others, like this one would suffer.

first encountered Dodsferd mid 2006 when I ordered Desecrating the Spirit of Life from Blackmetal.com based upon one phrase “Nordic-influenced Black Metal is heavily inspired by USBM legend Judas Iscariot” Being a Motorhead purist (the first album I ever bought with my own money was Overkill in 79) I immediately appreciated
the scratchy rasp of a voice and the slowish pace set in a forward direction by steady drumming with plenty of cymbal work and an endless barrage of simply memorable riffs.

Imagine prime Darkthrone shoved back through a Motorhead filter, something everyone should do from time to time, Fucking Your Creation takes the above-described formula and drops it through a Judas Iscariot filter. Moribund released this minus the hacking and spitting and vomiting but still gets the label “skunk-putrid blackpunk lusciousness” from Digitalmetal. The stink of vomit lingers despite the shower that ended Desecrating the Spirit of Life. A bath in Christian blood may take the skunk stink off.

Fucking Your Creation continues the plethora of movie sound samples, this time with a very obvious one. The pace is faster, the guitar sound is cleaner and the amp feedback is virtually eliminated. The vocals have developed into more of a shriek. The final song “Wrath,” named after himself, shows his forked tongue, demonstrating his take on depressive misanthropic black along the lines of Xasthur to go along with the other fork of the tongue, the aforementioned blackened Motorhead. Wrath says in the booklet that the album was written in total solitude and that Dodsferd is a philosophy that only he stands for. Wrath gives thanks to Odin and Akhenaten.

I offer my thanks to Odin as well, thanks for signing Dodsferd to Moribund. With such a blatant album title, you know what he stands for. The song titles reinforce this nihilism. The 12 minute “I Was Welcome Only by Death”, which features some outstanding shrieks, is noteworthy because he barely ever pauses with the vocals for the entire song. A favorite songs on this album as is “And Disease Was Spread In A Matter Of Seconds” which clocks in at nearly eleven minutes. I will join him standing with dignity in the world’s ashes.
