Thine Eyes Bleed – Thine Eyes Bleed

Perhaps best known thus far as being Toma Araya’s little brother Johnny’s band, Thine Eyes Bleed are billed as being technical thrash, and for the most part it’s an accurate descriptor. Not overly technical nor as Slayer influenced as one might expect, they do what they do well enough I suppose, but all in all, their second, self-titled effort comes off as being a little too cold, mechanical, and same-y sounding.Thine Eyes Bleed is not an album lacking in punch or grit, nor is it missing good riffs or solos – it’s just missing versatility – all the songs on the first half sound the same and bleed together until you get to the mid album interlude “Morta Diablo”, which is based around an ominous sounding clean guitar, with just a few whispered words near the end. “Truth in Evil” follows with a slower pace and a touch of groove in place of the spastic-like thrashing heard prior. Next track “The Mouth of Hell” returns to the sound of the albums first half, but features possibly the albums best riff. The final two tracks, “In Mortal Sin” and “Revert to Stone” continue as the first half was laid out, with the former being a bit bland and the latter being another highlight sporting some ferocious riffs and some of the best hooks to be heard, despite it’s slightly too long playing time.

The production of Thine Eyes Bleed doesn’t do it justice – the guitar tone is missing the bite and clarity that an album such as this should have, and the cymbals are too high in the mix.

Thine Eyes Bleed may be an album worthy of a couple spins, there’s really nothing here to be excited about. Rather ho-hum in my not so humble opinion.
