Bio
Withered Beauty was formed in 1993 in Gävle, Sweden, by two musicians – Magnus Björk and Daniel Bryntse, who previously met in a band called Complicity. In January 1994 Tobias Björklund joined the formation and with this line-up Withered Beauty begun working on their first demo. “Screams from the Forest” was released a couple of months later. The tape contained eight tracks, some from the Complicity period. Musically, the demo offered melodic death/black metal in the likes of early Hypocrisy, but definitely with some of the group’s own ideas intact. In April 1995 Withered Beauty recorded another demo – “Through Silent Skies” – this time including only six tracks, centered more around melodic death metal but still bearing plenty of black metal features. The demo did manage to draw some attention to the band, but unfortunately due to Tobias Björklund’s military service, Withered Beauty had to be put on hold for over a year.
Luckily, in September 1996 the group was contacted by the acclaimed record label Nuclear Blast, who offered Withered Beauty to appear on their upcoming compilation called “Death is just the beginning… vol.4”. Thus, in October 1996 the song “Immortality Is Mine” was recorded. Later on the song appeared on several other compilations, including the “10 Years of Nuclear Blast” box. In December the band signed a contract with the label and went to the famous Abyss studios, where under the guidance of Peter Tägtgren (the mastermind behind Hypocrisy and Pain, and producer of albums by such artists as Dimmu Borgir, Celtic Frost, Immortal and Children of Bodom) recorded their self titled debut release, which landed in stores on April 27th, 1998. The group brilliantly combined death metal heaviness with the melody and aggression of black metal, delivering a truly crushing album, filled with harsh guitars, light-speed drumming and insane bass, and featuring three various vocal styles – growls, screams and clean vocals.
“Withering Beauty” received a handful of great reviews in the press, but that unfortunately wasn’t enough for Nuclear Blast and in December 1998 they parted with the band. At that point Magnus Björk decided to leave the group, due to long-term musical differences. He was eventually replaced with William Blackmon. Soon the band greeted new drummer Jonas Lindström and in this renewed line-up they recorded a song called “The Fairest One”, which was supposed to be released on “The Voices of Death 4” compilation.
After playing several live shows promoting their debut LP, the group begun searching for a new label. Unfortunately, their current status is unknown. What is certain is that Withered Beauty remains one of the most valuable gems hidden in the realms of the modern metal scene. Remember – this is a treasure worth finding!
