I recently covered a raw as fuck Black Metal album from Embers of Ouroboros, and now I have yet another incredibly raw, but better album than the Embers of Ouroboros. I’m talking about Blutsauger and their blistering debut full-length, Nocturnal Blood Tyrants.
This album kept me company all day, it shredded my eardrums and froze my soul, which was a good thing because it was hot today.
“Blood Solstice” gets things going with some chanting that goes straight into a flurry of blasts, hitting hard like an angry bull there are some ultra-evil riffs being conjured up here. It’s reminiscent of that quality that made Zyklon-B’s Blood Must be Shed such a powerful album (it helped that they became Emperor, but whatever).
The brutality continues with “The Black Hunters” another one of those burning Black Metal tracks that nods to Darkthrone while keeping their own originality.
This album has better production than two dudes in a basement with a four-track, and the artwork is suitably menacing. Well, it’s a picture of the members looking menacing… Anyway, these crazy Italians have created a beast with this powerful debut.
“Black Shroud Ritual” bleeds with Satanic power, slow burning and bludgeoning; the black flame burns within this vortex of evil. “A Plague of Iron and Dust” bursts out with some 1349 feeling: blistering guitars and blasting drums leading a charge against Christendom.
“Wrath of the Banshee” is just what it says, a musical blitzkrieg of blasts and more killer riffs than you can shake a stick at. Nocturnal Blood Tyrants is chock full of rage, bleeding black ichor from every track. The title track has a Carpathian Forest meets Darkthrone vibe to it; it’s so infectious.
There are some Necrophobic bits in “Wash Them with Fire” and they continue with that vein on the closing track, “Ausgeblutet” a violent whirlwind that flays the soul until there’s nothing left.
As far as debuts go, Blutsauger has achieved a position amongst the ‘up and coming’ in the Italian Black Metal scene, a name that should be on your radar going forward, especially if you like the aforementioned bands. A fantastic debut full-length that calls for your attention.
